CogentSpec

Methodology

Spec-Driven Development

Turning an idea into a governed, verified project where the approved specification guides every build and change.

Introduction

Spec-Driven Development (SDD) gives the idea and its intended outcome priority over immediate coding. As AI makes code generation faster, the difficult part becomes defining what should be built, which choices matter, and how success will be proved.

CogentSpec captures that intent as an approved specification, binds it to an engineered Contract Pack, and carries both into the project. The connected AI can then build quickly inside clear boundaries while the user remains in control of direction and approval.

The Core Philosophy

CogentSpec acts as the bridge between human intent and AI execution. The specification holds the approved direction; the Contract Pack supplies the project rules, acceptance controls, and release expectations; the connected AI performs the implementation.

The result is a deliberate sequence of decisions, building, and evidence. People choose the outcome and approve meaningful changes. AI handles the implementation work. CogentSpec keeps the project identity, contract, and verification boundary intact.

Architectural difference

Direct dialogue. Governed delivery.

CogentSpec keeps you in direct conversation with the AI while an approved project contract provides the structure, requirements, controls, and acceptance criteria alongside that conversation.

01

Agentic builders

The agent mediates the work.

Platforms such as Replit-style builders place an AI agent inside their own execution environment. The agent edits files, runs commands, maintains working state, and reports through the platform's agent loop.

CogentSpec

The contract governs the work.

You discuss refinements naturally with the AI rather than routing every change through a separate builder agent. The contract keeps delivery controlled without becoming a translation layer between you and the model.

How CogentSpec Works

1 Define and approve

Describe the idea, choose the direction, and approve a clear specification. CogentSpec combines that approved direction with the right Contract Pack.

2 Build within the contract

CogentSpec prepares the governed project foundation. Your connected AI receives the approved direction and implements it inside those agreed boundaries.

3 Verify and release

Test the result against the specification, review the evidence, save useful versions, and prepare the verified project for release.

The Workflow

From first idea to verified release: seven clear stages.

Describe the Idea (Start in Plain Language)

Explain what people should see, experience, or be able to do. CogentSpec keeps the idea and any inspiration references together as a saved specification draft.

Checkpoint: The intended experience is clear enough to explore.

Choose a Direction (Shape the Experience)

Choose the project type, style or template, useful capabilities, build approach, and delivery preferences. CogentSpec turns those choices into a coherent direction without asking you to design the technical solution.

Checkpoint: The direction fits the idea and the people it is for.

Approve the Specification (Set the Build Authority)

Contract Pack

Review the proposed direction and project choices. When approved, CogentSpec binds them to a versioned Contract Pack and active Contract Runtime so the build has a precise source of authority.

Checkpoint: The approved specification, project contract, and Contract Pack agree.

Create the Foundation (Prepare the Project Safely)

.coge/contract-binding.json

Desktop Bridge creates the verified local project foundation, its machine-readable controls, portable knowledge files, and initial Git baseline in the exact folder you approved.

Checkpoint: The folder, project identity, contract binding, and foundation are verified.

Build the Project (Apply the Approved Direction)

PROJECT_KNOWLEDGE.md

Send “Build my project” in the connected AI task. The AI receives the approved brief, direction, refinements, and Contract Runtime, then implements the project inside its governed foundation.

Checkpoint: The connected AI is working in the correct project with the approved build authority.

Verify the Result (Prove It Works)

.coge/acceptance-map.json

Run the relevant tests, production build, release checks, and visual acceptance. Confirm that the healthy preview belongs to this exact project and assess the evidence through the CogentSpec Build Audit.

Checkpoint: Required checks pass and the preview matches the approved specification.

Improve and Release (Keep Changes Controlled)

CURRENT_STATE.md

Refine the approved project contract or project files, ask the connected AI to apply the change, and verify the result again. Save useful versions, preserve Git history, and prepare a Deployment Pack when the project is ready to move.

Checkpoint: Project knowledge and verified evidence describe the version being released.

Key Tenets

Approved Specification and Contract

Your approved direction and its versioned Contract Pack form the project's build authority. The connected AI receives both, keeping creative intent and production rules together.

Clarity Before Building

CogentSpec clarifies the intended experience, important choices, constraints, and measures of success before implementation begins—without requiring you to design the technical solution.

Governed Foundation

Every approved project begins with a verified local foundation containing its contract binding, acceptance controls, release expectations, and portable project knowledge.

Persistent Project Context

The approved specification, protected contract state, project knowledge, current state, and decisions remain connected across AI tasks and working sessions.

Human Direction and Approval

You choose the outcome, approve important decisions, and control when changes are applied. The connected AI performs the implementation inside those boundaries.

Controlled AI Implementation

The connected AI receives an explicit build handoff containing the approved brief, direction, refinements, and Contract Runtime before it changes the project.

Explicit Change Control

Updating the approved project contract does not silently alter the project. You ask the connected AI to apply the change, review the result, and verify it again.

Evidence Before Approval

Tests, production builds, release checks, visual acceptance, preview verification, and Build Audit evidence determine whether the result is ready.

Portable, Controlled Delivery

Git history, project knowledge, current-state records, and Deployment Packs keep the work understandable, recoverable, and ready to move without exposing protected contracts or credentials.

Comparison: SDD vs. Vibe Coding

AspectVibe CodingSpec-Driven Development
DefinitionExploratory, natural language prompts based on "vibes" or high-level ideas.Structured methodology with detailed, executable specifications as the source of truth.
ProcessAd-hoc prompting; quick iterations; relies on AI intuition.Idea -> approved specification -> governed foundation -> build -> verify -> improve and release.
StrengthsFast for prototypes; low barrier to entry; creative.Reliable for complex projects; reduces ambiguity; ensures alignment with intent.
WeaknessesProne to hallucinations, context loss, and brittle code.More upfront time required; can feel rigid for small hacks.
AI RolePrimary generator; handles most work with loose guidance. The connected AI implements the approved direction; CogentSpec governs the contract, evidence, and approval boundary.

Compare CogentSpec with other SDD approaches

Each approach has a different strength. This comparison shows its user-interface reliance, who it serves best, and the practical advantage CogentSpec offers alongside it.

Existing AI plan

Use ChatGPT, Claude, or Codex without setting up a separate model API key.

Your workspace

Build in local, remote, cloud, or hybrid project environments you control.

Direct AI dialogue

Keep working in the official web or desktop interface you already know.

Independent authority

CogentSpec governs the contract, approvals, evidence, and release while your chosen AI implements.

Private local Qwen

Keep sensitive AI work on your own hardware with no model-token charge for local inference.

Broad project reach

CogentSpec defines 42 project-type directions, with 40 direct Contract Pack foundations and 2 inherited Website-family foundations. A foundation is a starting point, not a finished project. Each project still needs its own implementation, verification and release approval.

Spec Kit-compatible exports

Generate reviewed specification, plan, task, checklist, and constitution files for use in Spec Kit workflows.

Portable project knowledge

Keep the approved specification, contracts, decisions, and evidence with the project so another supported AI can continue without starting again.

Versioned recovery

Save named versions of your project and restore an earlier working state when the direction changes.
